Gibbons & Nicholas, Dublin
Gibbons & Nicholas will present work by artists George Bolster and Siobhan McDonald at Volta, Basel. Each artist has research-based practices, involving scientific and cultural research. McDonald and Bolster have completed residencies at the European Space Agency and SETI Institute/NASA Ames respectively. Through their painting and works in experimental media, they push at the edges of received intelligence and conditioning, to explore the potential of our knowledge as a species, and how we can evolve amidst the wreckage of the Anthropocene. Employing the archive aesthetically and as a research tool, they examine historical and cultural fragments, analyzing both art and science.
McDonald works with scientists and historians to create works such as Solar White, 2018, carbon and charred bone on sea sponge. Using experimental materials, and often relying on their natural processes of shrinking or entropy to form the painted surface. Recent paintings are based on glass plate photographs, trapped in the ice after the final Franklin expedition, which have emerged preserved, as the glaciers melt.
Bolster’s works redefine how we site ourselves in a universe we know little about. His tapestries depict radio telescopes in vivid colors, using binary code to construct his jacquard images. In his series I am Tearing at the Fabric of Your Reality, 2018/9, fabrics are created torn/re-woven by hand and machine. Collectively, questioning how we construct our future by actively disengaging from our conditioning through ritual and religion.
Ultimately, these artists search for a future many neglect to assess through deconstructing any and all bodies of knowledge, while keeping an open mind on the shifts and changes within those fields.
