SET ESPAI D'ART, Valencia
The past dictates the future. SET ESPAI D'ART's proposal for VOLTA 14 presents recent works by Ana H. del Amo and Sean Mackaoui, in which found materials and imagery are reappropriated, recycled and manipulated to reveal new points of view and a rich narrative and poetic potential. Intimacy, personal collections, memories and archives are reorganized, transformed, deformed and fused into a complex personal experience. The variety of registries found in the works are linked formally by the theme of assembly, a careful union of shapes, forms and textures.
In a stage design that underlines a homogenous atmospheric experience where the past is brought to the present, Ana H. del Amo's (Cáceres, 1977) reappropriated door frames constitute an invitation to enter another real of reality. Del Amo reflects on the objectification of painting, transformed towards a new paradigm based on assembly, suggesting a perversion of minimalist geometry. Recycled wooden slats are regrouped and reinterpreted, with dense color applied by layers on the edges, generating multiple points of view. It's translated into wall pieces that arise through found objects, modified by incorporating color and three-dimensional shapes, combining the organic warmth of wood with the plastic sensuality of leather or the coldness of plexiglass.
Del Amo’s minimalism is counterbalanced by Sean Mackaoui’s (Lousanne, 1969) imposing installation, which generates a milieu of surprise while playing with signs and signifiers. Line, plane and color are weaved into a complex, highly charged and organic whole. Mackaoui's playful objects and innovative collages are not simply combinations of elements, juxtapositions of iconographies, shapes and forms, but give birth to new entities and realities, expose new meanings. A collection of strange images, press clippings, diverse typographies, is subsequently reconstructed and the past of the archive is brought into the future in new, fresh narratives.
