Standing in front of a painting by Tilo Baumgärtel, you'll begin to sink into another world. It is a descent into the imagination of an artist, who masterfully excels in creating dream visions on canvas and paper. The pictures captivate the viewers, once they open the gates of their minds. Paintings like dip nets, grabbing hold of you and taking you on a journey, an entry to a movie or a dreamed up fairy tale.
Hazy lighting situations, unreal, fantastic, enchanted images full of unfathomable mysteries, that touch you in the most gentle of ways, transport you into this feeling. Baumgärtel’s devised human figures, appear as mere hints, void of soul. Resting in themselves, mysterious. The pictures are guarded by phantom amazons, inhabited by snake-like tubes, personified candles – gone out or flickering – by lions, often dogs, bathing fairies, exotic birds, Egyptian, classicist, comic-book sculptures. The proposed uncanny scenarios that went before and are yet to arrive are always perceptible in the work at present.
A highly peculiar casting process must have predated the choice of the "cast of characters". The same holds true for the scouting of locations: gloomy, decaying cellars, snowy landscapes or meadows at dusk, conservatories, an abandoned. World Security Headquarter, foggy coast lines, warehouses, forest clearings with or without ponds, lined by either leafless trees or abundant plants in overgrown gardens. The moods that the artist creates with his use of color and light, have a tender, homely feel, and yet they are always accompanied by a vague sense of dread.
Tilo Baumgärtel's works, with their subtle or entirely absent period references, are like a movie in a single frame. According to your momentary state of mind they leave a shifting impression. In their uniqueness the pictures create a time out if mind, an individual mental state. They are simply incredible.
